How do you support people in a world with lots of AI?
My goal, at a fundamental level, is to make people aware of how AI works and how it affects their lives. AI systems can be very complex, but the purpose of explaining AI is not to make everyone a programmer and understand all the technical details, but to get them to understand the important parts. .
When AI makes a decision that affects people (recommend a video or qualify for a loan), I want to explain how that decision was made. We also want to provide information that makes sense, is useful, and allows people to act if necessary, rather than simply providing complex technical explanations.
We also want to find the best time to explain the AI. Our goal is to enable people to develop AI literacy early, including in primary and secondary education. And when people use AI-dependent products (everything from online services to medical devices), we want to include many opportunities for people to learn about the role AI plays, and its benefits and limitations. For example, if you can tell them early on what mistakes your AI-powered product is likely to make, you’ll be better prepared to understand and fix situations that might arise.
